SACHIN TENDULKAR the name itself strikes terror in the hearts of bowler all around the world. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar born on 24th April 1973 in Mumbai Maharastra India often referred to as “The Little master’’ or The master Blaster’ is a former Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsman in the history of cricket. Sachin’s father Ramesh Tendulkar as well known Marathi novelist and his Mother Rajni worked in the insurance company.
As a young boy Tendulkar was very mischevious. To curb his bullying tendencies he was introduced to cricket in 1984. He started taking coaching from the famous cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar at shivaji park Dadar. Sachin’s talent in the sports was apparent and almost immediately exposed. At the age of 14 hi scored 326 out of a world record stands of 664 in a school match. As his accomplishments grew he became a sort of prominent figure among the schools of Mumbai.
Besides school cricket he also played club cricket initially representing john Bright Cricket Club in Bombay’s premier Club Cricket Tournament the kanga League and later went on to play for Cricket Club of India. After schooling Tendulkar enrolled in Kriti college for further studies. On 14th November 1987 sachin a 15 years old lad was selected to represent Mumbai in India’s premier domestic first class tournament Ranjit Trophy. His rapid paced progress got him to debut internationally for India against Pakistan where he declined medical assistance for his injury on the field and continued to play. Sachin made his first international century at the young age of seventeen.
Sachin is the first Indian to score a century on his debut in first class cricket. He was selected to play for the team by the then captain Dilip Vengsarkar after observing him tactfully negotiating India’s best fast bowler Kapil dev. He followed scoring a century each in his first Deodhar and duleep trophies which are also Indian domestic tournaments. Tendulkar was Mumbai’s highest run scorer in 1988-89. He was also picked for a young Indian team to tour England twice under the star Cricket Club banner in 1988 and 1989 He also made an unbeatable century in the Irani Trophy match against Delhi . In August 1990 the 17 year old delivered a match saving 119 not out against England to become the second youngest player to record a century in Test Match. Tendulkar became the first International and Indian Player to ever sign with England’s famous Yorkshire Club. Sachin married Anjali a paediatrician by profession in 1995 and has two children Sara, Arjun.
He became the first player to score 1000 runs in one day International Competition. His efforts and contributition in cricket is unmatchable. He has been bestowed with numerous awards. He is the first cricketer to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna India’s higest sporting honour and the only cricketer and one of the first sportsperson along with Vishwanathan Award ,to receive Padma Vibhushan (2008) the second highest civilian honour of India. He is also the youngest recipient of Bharat Ratna India’s highest civilian honour in 2014. He also voted as the cricketer of the Generation in 2014. He also holds many other honours and accolades in his name like Arjuna Award Maharashtra Bhushan Award etc. He is a trailblazer to many of the youngsters in the world. He retired from one Day International competitions in December 2012 after swearing in as a member of parliament (Rajya Sabha) in New Delhi in june 2012 in the following year 2013 he announced retiring from cricket in all forms. He played his last match in November 2013 Finishing it with a jaw dropping accumulation of statistics that included more than 34000 runs and 100 centuries in international play. He also wrote an auto biography Playing it my way which came out in October 2014.
He has also invested in many business such as future group manipal group etc He is a co –owner of two restaurants in Mumbai and was ranked as the 51st richest sportsman in the world according to forbes list of worlds higest paid athletes 2013. Tendulkar’s selfless approach and devotion to cricket coupled with the lack of any ego problems makes him one of the most approachable and favoured personalities on the cricket field.
He has won rich praises from people all around the globe who see in him a living legend and a master batsman who is a league above his fellow cricketers. He has been the biggest cricket icon in the sports history of India in general and cricket in particular.
